As Exercise Physiologists we specialise in exercise and movement for prevention and management of chronic conditions. Some of these conditions include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Arthritis and osteoporosis
- Diabetes
- Cardiovascular disease
- Post-surgical rehabilitation
- Mental health
- Chronic pain and fatigue
- Cancer
- Neurological conditions
- Pulmonary disease
It is important to understand that a chronic condition is not treated through exercise, but rather exercise is used to better manage the condition and in turn lessen the symptoms that are experienced. The benefits of exercise is cumulative and with repetitive and constant participation incremental improvements can be achieved and maintained. Ceasing exercise for as little as two weeks can result in significant deconditioning. This is why compliance and long-term self-management is crucial in improving and maintaining quality of life. Our aim as Exercise Physiologist’s is to educate and assist all clients so that they have control over their condition and develop strategies they can implement when experiencing an increase in symptoms, whether it be pain, fatigue or reduced functionality. Through such education and assistance, along with support for continuing compliance, we aim to promote increased self-management outside of the clinic, allowing the client to achieve a level of well-being, where by they are in control of their condition rather than being controlled by their condition.
