Since November 2015 Vision has been running a specialised low back pain group called BACK to Life. BACK to Life is a program originally designed by an allied health team to implement with clients with non-specific lower back pain. It is a progressive 8 week program in a small group setting, looking at overhauling and optimising spine health. It is often seen that with any low back pain, whether non-specific or an underlying pathology, that there is a level of dysfunction in the core and spinal stabilisers. We focus on developing better control of TA and multifidus while also encouraging pelvic floor control and hip stabilisation. By having a holistic approach, we are able create awareness of posture but also how the muscles work together to regulate intra-abdominal pressure and how that effects them during ADLs. Despite being a set program, it is easily adapted for each individual so they get the most out of the program. The program has seen a lot of success since it was implemented and not just improving function and pain in those with low back pain, but also clients with severe hip osteoarthritis, pelvic floor dysfunction and those who are deconditioned. I strongly believe in the effectiveness of this program and with consistency and dedication have seen some amazing results. On average we have seen a 60% reduction in pain from pre to post and a 35.65% improvement in disability score (using OMPQ), many being re-classed from high risk to moderate or even low risk.
Low back pain can be a debilitating condition, one that often people can’t see a solution to. It was reported that 1 in 6 Australian’s suffered from back pain in 2014-15. If you are looking to make positive changes and learn effective ways to improve and cope with your pain, BACK to Life might be just what you are looking for.
