As Megan mentioned in her article from last week, the “One million steps” campaign with the heart foundation has started. Following on from this I thought that I would celebrate on the basics of walking and what it can do to improve your health and wellbeing. When it comes to re-starting or getting back to exercise, everyone needs a starting point or an activity that they are ableto do on a regular basis.
One of the most basic activities that can be done is walking. Walking is a recommended cardio exercise that should be part of a healthy lifestyle. It is true that walking does not burn as many calories as jogging and running can, however, there is a lot or research out there that show that there can be some significant health and fitness benefits from walking. The current recommendations for walking are 30 minutes per day. It has been found participating in regular walking can lead to reductions in diabetes and heart disease, decreases for those who have high blood pressure, increase or elevation in mood, and decreases in the prevalence of symptoms associated with depression. For the elderly, there can be increases found in bone density. These are the effects on your health but there is also an improvement seen to general fitness and physical function. There are decreases seen in physical disability in older individuals as well inmproved mobility.
Walking is something that you can do by yourself, with friends and family as well as through an organised walking group. There are many parks and trails in and around Toowoomba that are suitable for a daily, weekly or weekend pleasure, a list of which can be viewed through this link. If joining a walking group is more your speed, the Vision Walking Group meets at the Willows Health & Lifestyle Centre on Tuesday at 6:30am and Thursday afternoons at 5:30pm for a gold coin donation.
