While watching the news last Thursday, a segment about vascular dementia and cardiovascular health came on. It discussed the link between regular exercise to keep your cardiovascular risk factors down, helping reduce your risk of vascular dementia. The segment follows a lady who was recently diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment fighting to keep her memory having watched her mother battle Alzheimer’s. This story struck close to home. I have a prominent family history of both Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia as well as cardiovascular disease and have seen the devastating effects. It got me thinking about what my driving force was behind staying healthy and feel that my focus has shifted. Everyone has their own motivations to exercise whether it be a hobby, social or health reasons and for me it is a combination of all three. I want to do all I can to reduce my risk of developing these chronic health conditions.
